    Students will learn the basics of recognizing an emergency and providing life-saving care until EMS arrives. CPR and AED skills will be learned through discussion and video demonstration, and practiced using in-class scenarios. Successful completion of the course results in CPR/AED for Lay Responders certification through the Red Cross. $25 course fee covers materials and cost of certification.

  • SLC 0039 - 0Create the Life You Crave

    During this 90-day online class, you’ll focus on intentional action as you develop a personal and professional vision that inspires you to work it each and every day. Each week you’ll access a private download page and listen to audio recordings of life-enhancing lessons. You’ll complete weekly results-oriented worksheets that put you into action toward your specific goals, and you’ll follow a one-hour structure around movement, journaling and decluttering exercises. The class format is tailored around your schedule and ensures mindful action, clarity and focus as you create the life you crave. This course will require approximately 60 or more hours to complete over the course of 90 days.

    There is more to campfire cooking than just roasting hotdogs and marshmallows. Come learn the art of cooking over an open fire using natural ingredients to produce healthy and delicious meals. We will use several unique cooking techniques to prepare a multitude of mouth-watering dishes for both vegetarians and omnivores. We will also engage in a lively discussion of the practicality and ecological sensibility of cooking with an open fire in an age of lightweight miracle camping stoves. Bring your appetite!

  • SLC 0047 - Intro to Off-Grid Living

    This workshop will introduce the concepts of designing and living within an “off-grid” system. Whether out of necessity or ideals, an off-grid living environment is meant to support all or almost all daily living requirements of a person (or small community) without dependence upon the larger societal infrastructure for food, water, shelter, electric, heating etc. Students will tour home(s), explore options, imagine their own space, and then make a preliminary design based off their knowledge and present to the class for discussion.

  • SLC 0048 - Leadership for Making a Difference

    This Leadership workshop is designed to enhance your leadership skills toward building rewarding relationships, utilizing your strengths more effectively and fine-tuning decision making skills to generate motivation and execution. Leadership is viewed as a process that is ultimately concerned with fostering change. If you’d like to learn how to make a difference in an organization or community, this workshop is for you. Leaders are not necessarily those who hold formal leadership positions - all people are potential leaders. Furthermore, since the concept of leadership implies that there are other people involved, leadership is, by definition, a group process. This workshop will engage participants in exploring their personal leadership styles through group activities and personal reflection.

  • SLC 0049 - Learn to Knit: Making Socks

    Learn the basics of knitting and complete a pair of socks in a social environment. We’ll learn basic stitches, talk about knitting’s role as a traditional craft and form of activism (mitten trees and yarn bombing), and learn to function on many levels in a knitting group. We will work will re-purposed sweaters and examine how recycling can be a statement in your creations. $25 course fee covers cost of materials and needles you will keep.

    Winning the Private and Public Wars on Intimacy and Community (facing the pandemic that is HIV) requires facing the fact that for many people, they have no idea what leverage is, much less what leverage they possess.   • SLC 0051 - Northwoods Bushcraft

    Before the advent of the infomercial and the big box shopping store, the tools and materials that made life possible for humans were made by hand from the raw materials around them. Bushcraft represents that first hand connection, the crafting of life from nature. Join us for a weekend of camping and crafting in the northwoods where we’ll be making bowls, baskets, bows and arrows, fishing gear, trapping tools, and more as well as a cozy backwoods camp with all the comforts of home (minus the internet). This course includes a Friday-Sunday overnight camping trip.

    This workshop will focus on physical wellness and social wellness topics via a nutrition education component and an exploration of other dimensions of food in society.   • SLC 0053 - Philanthropy & Grantsmanship

    An introduction to nonprofit fundraising including grant writing. Students will learn how nonprofit organizations are structured, various methods of fundraising, the ethics and best practices of fundraising, and working with a board of directors. The acquisition, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship steps of the fundraising process will be covered.

  • SLC 0054 - Pilates with props

    This workshop will teach the basic foundations of the Pilates method of exercise and a beginning/intermediate mat routine. In addition, the participants will learn release work and core stabilization principles using a foam roll. The course will also incorporate the use of massage balls, which are small balls that can be used to decrease tightness that occurs in muscles from working at a desk for long periods of time. The class will address common postural problems associated with being a student and give many techniques to stay limber, strong and full of energy.

  • SLC 0056 - Standard First Aid with CPR- Adult

    This class will focus on identifying an emergency and learning skills to manage the incident while waiting for professional help. We will cover CPR and AED usage, breathing emergencies, sudden illness, environmental emergencies, soft tissue injuries, and injuries to muscles, bones and joints. This class results in certification for first aid through American Red Cross. Course fee covers certification and materials.

  • SLC 0057 - Starting Your Own Business

    Business is one sector of our society leading innovation for sustainability. Drawing on the presenter’s experience running a farm business and the experience of other local entrepreneurs, learn about how to clarify a vision, develop a business plan, market your idea, and work with finances.     Learn about a range of green building techniques and home strategies to mitigate carbon-emissions by touring area homes and businesses. Explore building materials and siting, energy use, cooking, refrigeration, domestic hot water, heating and cooling, water, waste, and food storage. The class will explore ideas of what a climate neutral home is, and also consider the possibility of a climate positive home. Bring a packed lunch.

    This workshop will introduce two ancient Indian practices and philosophies; Yoga (meaning “union”) and Ayurveda (meaning the “knowledge of life”).   • SLC 0061 - Basics of Northwoods Canoeing

    In this workshop, we will explore the rich heritage and diversity of techniques that generations of canoeists have utilized to enjoy the lakes and rivers of the Northwoods. Students will become familiar with the history of the canoe, basic paddle strokes for still and moving water, and the fundamentals of canoeing safety. Through a combination of classroom instruction, on the water learning, and a visit to the WI Canoe Heritage Museum, students who complete this course will leave with the basic skills and knowledge to enjoy a lifetime of canoeing.

  • SLC 0063 - Fly Fishing Basics

    This workshop explores the skills, traditions, and literature of fly fishing for trout. On the first day of the workshop, we will focus on the basics of fly casting, the fundamentals of knots and tackle, and the history of the sport. This session will be followed by a full day on a local trout stream, where we will refine our casting and explore fly presentation and stream-side entomology.

  • SLC 0064 - FYE Training & Experience

    Students will be trained to lead a group of approximately 10 new students through the 10 weeks First Year Experience program. Training includes discussion of responsibilities, role of the leader, boundaries of the leader, and assistance in planning for activities. Contact between FYE leaders and FYE staff coordinators will be ongoing throughout the semester. Registration is by instructor authorization only - you will not be able to register on My Northland.   • SLC 0068 - Canoe Paddle Carving

    Spring in Northern Wisconsin means maple syruping, wildflowers and ice out. Nothing is better than paddling a canoe with a paddle carved by hand, better yet your two hands. From log to paddle, this class will teach you basic woodworking skills, sharp-edged tool use and maintenance, and various wood finishing techniques. All materials will be provided. Course fee is $30 and covers materials that will eventually become the paddle you keep!

  • SLC 0071 - Ice Fishing

    The goal of this workshop is to teach new or beginner level ice fishermen how to safely and effectively fish through the ice in Northern Wisconsin. The class will be taught at different times on an inland lake and two different times on Chequamegon bay. Tactics on where to fish, what baits to use, what gear to use, rules and regulations and even how to dress will be covered during the class. You will need to purchase a fishing license. Your instructor will give you more information about this as class gets closer.

  • SLC 0072 - Introduction to Shore Fishing

    This workshop is designed as an introductory experience for someone who has never gone fishing. We will travel to the marina in Ashland to try our hand at fishing from shore. While there, we will learn the following skills: casting, baiting your own hook (note: we will be using live minnows and worms), reeling fish in (hopefully we catch some!) and how to properly remove hooks and release fish. We will also discuss the different fishing techniques used for different species of fish while also trying out a variety of artificial lures. All of the necessary fishing equipment will be supplied! Please note: Students without a Wisconsin fishing license will need to purchase a one-day license for the date of this class. The cost of the license is $8 for residents and $10 for non-residents.

  • SLC 0073 - Introduction to Wine Tasting/Apprec

    Introduction to Wine Tasting & Wine Appreciation: This workshop will cover the basics of wine tasting and wine appreciation, concentrating on the characteristics of different red and white varietal wines. We will examine how wines are scored, the vocabulary of wine tasting, what to look for in different wines, and how to develop your own preferences. The 5 sessions include the big reds, interesting whites, dessert wines, local and regional wines, and a quick “tour” of world wine geography.     This course is a basic, on-day introductory course on learning to sail. You will learn to sail in 2 person 14ft. 420s & Catalina Capri sailboats.   • SLC 0076 - Learn Your Way Around the Bay

    Do you want to explore the Bay area beyond what you find on campus or in Ashland? This workshop is for you! All 6 sessions will involve an off-campus field trip to areas like Bad River, Madeline Island, Les Voigt State Fish Hatchery, orchards around Bayfield, tribal parks, Bayfield school powwow , Houghton Falls, local theaters, the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center complex, and 2 of the best ice cream shops around. You will learn about tribal natural resources and management, area history, recreational and entertainment opportunities, career and job possibilities, and the cultural ties between Northland College and surrounding communities. $25 course fee covers additional costs of the class, such as admission.

    Practice this ancient Chinese form of moving meditation to feel calmer, more focused, and centered. Through its slow, relaxed, and graceful series of movements, coordinated with easy, deep breathing, Tai Chi offers many health benefits (e.g., increased energy, reduced stress, improved balance, relief of chronic pain, improved cardiovascular fitness, improved sleep quality, reduced symptoms of Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder, and a greater overall feeling of well-being.     Do you ever feel like others aren’t listening when important conversations are happening? Do you tune out when someone presents ideas that don’t fit your viewpoints? If so, this is the class for you. In this class you will: learn to listen to other view points, accept and evaluate criticism, maintain your personal integrity, stand your truth without blame or judgment, let go of being attached to outcomes, learn to take responsibility for your own feelings, identify nonviolent and violent communication skills, and identify emotions we experience when we don’t get what we need. Most importantly, we will build skills to develop the tools to effectively communicate and learn when to take things on and when to let them go.

    The First Year Experience (FYE) program is designed to engage new Northlanders in the richness and diversity of student life. Participation in an Outdoor Orientation trip kicks off the program, which continues through the first 8 weeks of the semester. First-year students participate in a variety of planned events and activities both on campus and in the local region. These events and activities are built around the five aspects of Northland’s co-curricular program, Dimensions.   • SLC 0101 - Budo Taijutsu

    Budo Taijutsu is a traditional Japanese martial art for the protection of self and others. Students will learn how to roll, break-fall, escape attacks, joint locks, and various weapons. This course is open for both students who are interested in starting Budo Taijustu as well as students who have already taken the beginning class and want to continue their learning and begin to explore the spiritual and intellectual dimensions of Budo Taijutsu.

  • SLC 0102 - Telemark Skiing

    Telemark skiing, also known as free heel skiing, is a skiing technique based on using the telemark turn. Learn this graceful and fluid form of skiing that originated in the 19th century in Norway. Telemark skiers use gear very similar to alpine skiers, except for the binding, which only connects the boot to the ski at the toes, just as in cross-country skiing. All levels welcome, beginner to expert.

In this workshop, we’ll teach you sound fundamentals while building a solid repertoire of moves that you can put to use on the social dance floor.   • SLC 0121 - Advanced Whitewater Kayaking

    For students with experience and capability in kayaks on rivers up to class II. Students should come to this course with a reliable pool roll. We’ll explore rescue options, paddle technique, and work on maneuvers for use on class III-IV whitewater, as well as instructor and teaching considerations for leading others on the river. This course includes several nights of overnight camping and will offer you American Canoe Association Whitewater level training. Students should have prior river kayaking experience, preferably with completion of a beginner whitewater course. Instructor approval required in order to register.

    Build a snow craft of ancient origins. For this two-day workshop, participants will spend the first day learning about the type of wood being used while preparing their staves for steam bending. For assembly on the second day, participants will attach cross bars using hand peened copper rivets along with the rope and any other final touches. Everyone will leave this workshop with a finished 8-10’ long toboggan of their own.
