*This major is pending final approval from Northland College’s accreditor, expected late April 2024.

Food is a basic human need and accounts for over one-quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions annually. In this major, you’ll use a broad knowledge of food as a lens to understand social, racial, and environmental challenges that impact our daily lives. In turn, the focus on sovereignty and justice is a platform for more critically engaging with the study of food.

Your studies combine hands-on food preparation courses with the history, theory, land use, and art of diverse food communities in the U.S. and around the world. The major develops students who are critically aware of the future of food on our changing planet—especially the effects of global climate change on food and food production’s wider impact on regional and international communities.

With this major, you’ll learn how to read critically, write clearly and authoritatively, and think comprehensively about food and environmental justice in the United States and abroad.

The Food Sovereignty & Environmental Justice major prepares students for careers in advocacy for food sovereignty and access, climate advocacy, sustainable agriculture and food production, journalism, diplomacy, law, entrepreneurship, public relations, public administration, graduate studies, and non-profit work.
